To dopiero drugie zwycięstwo Sagana w tym sezonie, na które musiał czekać kolejne dwa miesiące. Wcześniej kolarz Tinkoff-Saxo był najlepszy na jednym z etapów Tirreno-Adriatico, ale potem długo musiał czekać na kolejny sukces, po drodze zajmując m.in. trzy drugie miejsca w Kalifornii.
Słowak popisał się bardzo mocnym finiszem Avila Beach, wyprzedzając na kresce Wipperta i Cavendisha, ale także Daniela Ossa (BMC Racing Team), który jeszcze na 50 metrów przed metą – po długim finiszu – znajdował się na prowadzeniu. Sagan był zdecydowanie najszybszy z rozpędzonego peletonu i nie dał szans rywalom z grupy, szybko pozbawiając złudzeń także Ossa. Kolarz Tinkoff-Saxo na ostatnich 100 metrach rozpoczął potężny finisz, dzięki czemu szybko zostawił rywali za plecami, a na kilkanaście metrów przed metą wyprzedził Ossa. O długość roweru gorszy był Wippert, a trzeci Cavendish, który po dwóch wcześniejszych zwycięstwach dziś nie miał szans na pokonanie rywali.
Prowadzenie w wyścigu zachował wczorajszy zwycięzca, Toms Skujins (Hincapie Racing Team), którego przewaga nad Saganem spadła do 22 sekund, dzięki bonifikacie czasowej za zwycięstwo dla Słowaka.
